Magic folk opera is a hit

Children from five local schools took part in two performances of an opera created for them.

Barnsley composer Helen Madden used a traditional Chinese fable as her inspiration and created “The Magic Paintbrush” for children and young people from Greenacre, Barugh Green Primary, Goldthorpe Primary, Thurnscoe Gooseacre Primary and Darton College.

The performances took place at Barnsley Civic and at Dearne Playhouse and featured professional actors, singers and musicians performing with the children. Traditional instruments were used as well as software which allows those with complex disabilities to perform live music.

Prior to the performances workshops had been held in the schools where children had the chance to explore the story, music and create some fantastic artwork.

As if this was not exciting enough, Judith Weir CBE was also involved. Judith is Master of the Queen’s Music and she composed a special anthem for Greenacre School which was proudly performed by Greenacre students accompanied by Barnsley Met Brass Band.

EnRich was very pleased to be able to support this fantastic opportunity and provided a grant as did Barnsley Music Hub and Arts Council England to facilitate these two special events.
